Keller ISD students are having a "homeless awareness" event.
This both amuses me and saddens me.
While I am in agreement with the idea of gathering blankets to give to homeless people, the rest of the event is pretty much a sham.
Pardon my cynicism, if you will, but spending the night on a football field somehow just doesn't compare with the plight of the homeless people of our cities.
The football field is a safe environment, for one thing. Maybe if they bring in some vagrants with knives...
The event is also, I'm relatively certain, adult-supervised. Again, emphasis on safe.
Homelessness is anything but safe.
It's also for only one night. How many people are homeless for one night?
So...if they really want to be "homelessness aware," perhaps they should wait until summer and spend a whole MONTH outside somewhere, when the temperatures are in the upper 90s and seldom drop below 85 at night.
Of course, I am certainly not advocating putting our youth in harm's way. Just gather the blankets. Maybe hand out some food.
But don't you DARE go out and spend a night on a safe, guarded football field and go away thinking you have any idea what it feels like to be homeless.
Don't you dare.
TTFN, y'all.
