A couple of nights ago, there was a huge brawl during a basketball game between the Detroit Pistons and the Indiana Pacers. The players were fighting with the fans.
Read that last sentence again.
THE PLAYERS WERE FIGHTING WITH THE FANS!
That is the second time (that I know of) during this year's sports seasons that this has happened. Earlier in the year, two Texas Rangers pitchers got into a fight with some Oakland A's fans.
What's going on, here? Why is this happening? I mean, we are all used to players getting into dugout or bench-emptying brawls. That happens, and, we all admit is somewhat entertaining. Anybody remember seeing 40-something year old Nolan Ryan pummeling young Robin Yount? Heehee...that was priceless. Yount would think twice before ever charging the mound again, I think.
But, folks, this trend of players throwing punches at fans? That's ugly. And so is fans following players onto the field/court.
People are getting meaner. Call me crazy, but I see this as being related to the amount of "road rage" incidents that we see out on our highways.
People are getting meaner. It's a sign of the times.
No doubt I will be reminded by some of the way people in the outfield used to throw stuff at Ty Cobb, who was, himself reputed to be extremely mean. Point taken. Nevertheless, our society fools itself into thinking it is more "civilized" than past societies.
I think we have been proven wrong.
