This week, I am going to begin work on John MacArthurs Scripture Memory System. He has developed a 52-week system to memorize key Bible passages that he has selected. The package includes cds of his teaching, Scripture memory cards, as well as a cd-rom which includes the text of the 52 passages in a desktop format, and a screen saver which also displays the verses. The package is available through MacArthurs ministry, Grace To You.
The first weeks passage is Psalm 103:1-4. Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies. I believe that this is a great passage with which to begin a memory program.
The reading from My Utmost for His Highest today concerns depression. Gods cure for depression is to do the next thing. God will call us to ordinary activity to draw us out of depression. The illustration is Elijah. Elijah had just experienced a great victory over the prophets of Baal, but Jezebel had it out for him. For some reason this frightened Elijah to no end. He ran a days journey from Beersheba, into the wilderness, sat down under a broom tree and began to whine. After listening to his whining for a bit, God first caused him to fall asleep. When Elijah awoke, there were some cakes prepared for him. An angel told him to arise and eat. That was it. To get him out of his depression, Elijah was to simply arise and eat. He didnt get some huge assignment. That would come later. He was told to do something ordinary.
In reading my Daily Bible reading for the day, I come across an extremely valuable verse. Exodus 33:11 says, So the LORD spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. This is so powerful. Would that God would speak to me in this way.
